For the first time in over 50 years, the iconic Canadian band The Stampeders will tour British Columbia without one of its founding members, Ronnie King, who sadly passed away earlier this year. Drummer Kim Berly and guitarist Rich Dodson will honor King during their upcoming concerts. They’re set to kick off a 15-city tour in Cranbrook on April 22.
Kim Berly, who is now 76, shared that the Ontario tour they planned was a tribute to King. “We had his stool on stage, and we shared memories through a special video highlighting Ronnie,” he said. “It’s emotional for us and the fans. We want to give everyone a chance to say goodbye.”
King’s spot will be filled by Dave Chabot, a longtime friend of Berly’s, who brings fresh energy to the band at age 66. “Ronnie was excited for the tour, but we knew he was facing health challenges,” Berly noted. He emphasized that Chabot has the spirit and talent to light up the stage.
The Stampeders will perform hits like "Sweet City Woman," "Wild Eyes," and "Carry Me." This trio made a mark in the music world during the 1970s, touring extensively and becoming Canada’s musical voice. Their popularity surged between 1971 and 1976, a period when they traveled more than any other Canadian band. Although they split in 1977, they reunited in 1991 at the Calgary Stampede and have toured since.
Berly mentioned, “The show hasn’t changed much. We’re all about connecting with the audience. There’s a special energy exchange during our performances that keeps us going.” It’s a sentiment echoed by many fans, who often share their excitement on social media, celebrating the band’s enduring legacy.
Over the years, The Stampeders have earned numerous accolades, including multiple inductions into the SOCAN Songwriters Hall of Fame. Their distinct blend of rock has left a lasting impact on Canadian music.
