Sir Keir Starmer has shut down calls for an inquiry into Chancellor Rachel Reeves. She recently apologized for not having the required rental license for her family home in London. In her letter to the Prime Minister, Reeves acknowledged her mistake and expressed her sincere apology.
The Prime Minister, after consulting his ethics adviser, said he was pleased the matter could be resolved without further investigation. However, the Conservatives are pushing for an inquiry and want Reeves to be dismissed.
This issue came to light after the Daily Mail reported it. Reeves admitted to Starmer that she wasn’t aware of needing a license after moving into Downing Street last year. She said, “This was an inadvertent mistake. As soon as I learned about it, we applied for the license.”
In response, the Prime Minister stressed that the public expects high standards from officials. His adviser decided not to pursue the case further due to Reeves’ quick response.
Her home in Southwark, which is listed for rent at £3,200 a month, must have a selective license according to local regulations. These licenses are designed to enhance housing quality and regulate private landlords. Reeves’ supporters say she was misinformed by her estate agents about the licensing requirement.
The Southwark Council’s website warns that failing to secure a license can lead to prosecution or fines. Public reactions have been mixed, with Conservative representatives calling for accountability, stating that if Reeves has broken the law, she should face consequences.
Badenoch, a Conservative spokesperson, criticized Starmer for not taking decisive action. Meanwhile, Daisy Cooper of the Liberal Democrats suggested that this situation could harm public confidence in the government’s ability to manage important issues, especially in light of the upcoming Budget.
