At the 2025 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series, officials will introduce an exciting new tool. Fans might not see it, but they’ll be using the NHL Watch Comms App on their Apple Watches.
This app allows officials to receive important updates right on their wrists during the game. They’ll get alerts about the game clock, penalty timers, and which players are in the penalty box.
Though this app has been tested in indoor games over the past few seasons, Saturday’s match will mark its first use outdoors. The Columbus Blue Jackets will take on the Detroit Red Wings at the iconic Ohio Stadium.
Communication can be tricky for officials, especially with the loud noise from the crowd and the fast-paced action of the game. An outdoor setting adds even more challenges.
David Lehanski, the NHL’s executive vice president of business development and innovation, noted that without a big scoreboard above the ice, it’s harder for officials to keep track of timing. The Watch Comms App is designed to help solve that problem.
So far this season, over 90 percent of officials have been using this technology, which shows how much they value it. They helped shape the app from the beginning, ensuring it meets their specific needs.
The NHL worked closely with Apple and Presidio to create this app. Presidio’s vice president of digital services, Andres de Corral, mentioned that their goal was to enhance safety and reduce game interruptions.
Lehanski praised the partnership between the NHL, Apple, and Presidio. He believes they’re working with the best in the business to bring this innovation to the game.
This collaboration isn’t new; since 2017, the NHL has used Apple products like iPads and Macs to provide real-time video for teams. This has helped coaches and players make key adjustments during games.
