Stay Ahead of the Weather: CNN Unveils New Lifestyle App for Accurate Forecasts

CNN has just released a free weather app for smartphones, about a year after its announcement. Available on both Apple and Google stores, the app aims to combine regular weather forecasts with reports from CNN’s meteorologists.

To use the app, you’ll need to create a CNN account or log in with an existing one. This sets it apart from popular weather apps like AccuWeather and Fox Weather, which don’t require any account setup. CNN describes its weather app as more than just a forecasting tool; it’s a lifestyle service meant to help users navigate their day-to-day lives.

Ben French, CNN’s Senior Vice President of New Business, explained that the goal is to offer a comprehensive view of weather. He said, “CNN Weather will prepare people for the day ahead and keep them safe during severe weather events.” This feature aims to help users not only know the forecast but also understand weather phenomena better.

Angela Fritz, the Senior Director of CNN Weather, pointed out that many people already have default weather apps filled with data. However, she emphasized the importance of context. “A good weather app should help you understand the forecast and what to do with that information,” she said. This approach addresses the needs of users who may not be familiar with meteorological jargon.

CNN’s app will evolve based on user feedback. Fritz acknowledged that improvements are always possible but believes the initial version has laid a solid foundation. She also criticized competitors for offering constant live coverage, stating CNN will only provide updates when weather could significantly impact viewers.

As severe weather events become more frequent due to climate change, understanding forecasts has never been more critical. According to a recent NOAA report, the U.S. experienced a 20% increase in severe weather events compared to two decades ago. This underscores the need for clear weather communication that CNN aims to provide.

CNN Weather’s aim is different. It’s not about daily checks; it’s meant for planning trips or deciding what clothes to wear. But if you’re just looking to know when it will stop raining, you might need to explore other apps.

This unique approach sets CNN Weather apart in a crowded market. By focusing on context and understanding, they hope to create a loyal user base that values more than just numbers on a screen.
