Stay Calm and Play On: Why Yelling at Referees Hurts Your Game – Part 2

Recently, I’ve been reflecting on the troubling trend of adults mistreating officials in youth sports. This behavior affects everyone involved, especially the kids who are just trying to have fun and learn.

A former colleague shared an interesting update from the Nanaimo/Ladysmith school district. This group, known as NETPEA (Nanaimo Elementary Teachers’ Physical Education Association), organizes inter-school sports leagues like football and basketball. Following last year’s basketball playoffs, which saw a lot of negativity and shouting towards refs, they made some big changes. In a recent meeting with around 30 teachers, the group voted to eliminate playoffs and scorekeeping. They will now change players every five minutes to keep things fair. This decision was met with strong approval.

While I understand why this group felt the need to take these steps, it’s unfortunate that it has come to this. Last year’s playoffs were a chaotic experience, with many adults yelling at officials, myself included at times. Without referees, there can be no games, and that’s not what anyone wants.

The situation is disheartening because sports are important for teaching kids about winning and losing. These experiences prepare them for life outside of sports. While fun is key, sports also help young people learn valuable lessons about perseverance and teamwork.

Despite my team’s impressive record of 59 wins and a tie in Little League, I remember feeling frustrated about that one tie! Competing in family board games was equally intense, and I was taught to play my hardest. Winning and losing are just part of the game. Kids should learn to celebrate victories and analyze losses. They’re resilient and can handle a bit of adversity.

Unfortunately, the way adults are behaving is robbing children of these experiences. When they are told, “You can’t play because the parents are acting foolishly,” it sends a negative message. It’s a lesson no child should have to learn.

So, let’s support minor sports by respecting the officials. The future of these games depends on it. Everyone deserves the chance to enjoy the game.
