Stay Healthy and Happy This Holiday Season with Duke’s ‘Festive Fit Focus’ Tips!

Cheryl Bolton faced a tough challenge when she was diagnosed with uterine cancer seven years ago. After undergoing treatment, she celebrated being cancer-free for five years. However, the effects of surgery and lymphedema in her legs continue to be a part of her life.

As an Advanced Respiratory Therapist at Duke Pulmonary Rehab in Raleigh, Cheryl strives to maintain her health. Last year, she joined Duke’s employee wellness program, LIVE FOR LIFE, which features a self-guided initiative called Festive Fit Focus. The program promotes healthy living during the busy holiday season.

“The holidays can be overwhelming,” Cheryl said. “The program really helped me stay on track.”

The Festive Fit Focus runs from November 3 to January 2. It provides employees with support and encouragement to maintain their wellness during times filled with holiday treats and stress. Participants get weekly emails packed with healthy recipes, stress management strategies, and physical activity suggestions. Each week, they report their weight anonymously by Monday, and those who participate earn LIVE FOR LIFE Dollars based on their engagement.

Cheryl appreciated how the program’s healthy recipes kept her focused, particularly when holiday temptations were everywhere. Research from the Journal of Obesity suggests that individuals typically gain 0.8 to 2 pounds from Thanksgiving to New Year’s.

“The recipes helped me resist those holiday treats,” she shared. “It’s a reminder to prioritize my health.”

Amid family visits and balancing her roles as a mother and grandmother, Cheryl found the motivation she needed. The program eased the stress of juggling holiday demands while managing her health journey.

In today’s busy world, wellness programs like this one are crucial. Studies indicate that structured support can lead to better health outcomes. A recent survey found that employees who engage in workplace wellness programs experience lower stress levels and improved work-life balance.

The importance of health, especially during busy times, cannot be overstated. Cheryl’s story is just one example of how people can navigate challenges and maintain their health with the right support.
