Alaska Regional Hospital is taking precautions as Mount Spurr shows signs of potential eruption. The volcano is currently rated under a “yellow” advisory by the Alaska Volcano Observatory, but recent updates suggest the risk may be lessening. Still, the hospital is not taking any chances.

Sean Murphy, the hospital’s Emergency Management Specialist, emphasizes the importance of being ready. “I’d rather be over-prepared than underprepared,” he stated. Murphy’s main goal is to keep the hospital operational and safe for both patients and staff.

To minimize ash exposure, the hospital plans to restrict access to two main entrances. “We are going to defeat the automatic opening of the doors," he explained. One door will be opened at a time to ensure a controlled entry process. This method helps reduce the amount of ash entering the building.

The hospital is stocking up on supplies. They have a year’s worth of linens, perishable foods, and N95 masks. They are also prepared with extra clothing for anyone who gets covered in ash. Additionally, staff will have protective eyewear available if needed.

Murphy shared that they have set up accommodation for staff to stay at the hospital, with 110 cots ready and another 140 on the way. If an eruption does happen, a designated group of employees will be on standby to work around the clock. “Team A will be ready to stay as long as needed, and Team B will follow when it’s safe to return home,” he explained.

There’s a real possibility of a rise in patient visits after ash falls, especially from those with ongoing health issues. The hospital is preparing for this potential surge, ensuring they can provide care when it’s needed most.

In a situation like this, local medical facilities play a critical role. Alaska has a history of volcanic activity, which adds to the complexity of health services.
