Montclair State University will go fully remote on Monday, January 26, due to a severe winter storm. This means no in-person classes, activities, or meetings on both the Montclair and Bloomfield campuses. All university services will be available online.
Essential staff should come in as planned, while everyone else should work from home. If you had time off approved, it will still count. The goal is to get back to normal operations on Tuesday, January 27, but an update will be sent if things change.
- Please avoid driving on campus during the storm. This is vital for your safety and allows our team to clear snow effectively.
- If you have a car, move it to the parking decks in Montclair or the eastern side of Lot B1 in Bloomfield by noon on Saturday, January 24.
- The Student Center, Student Recreation Center, and Sprague Library in Montclair will be closed on Sunday, January 25.
- Dining Halls—Sam’s, Freeman, and Schweitzer—will remain open throughout the weekend.
- Good news for students: The Add/Drop deadline for Session A and B courses is now extended until Tuesday, January 27, at 11:59 PM. Check the Student Services page for more details.
Stay tuned for updates this weekend on What’s Open and the news article. If you encounter an emergency during the storm, contact University Police at 973-655-5222.
When severe weather hits, changes like these are common in universities across the country. A recent survey from the National Association of College and University Business Officers shows that nearly 60% of schools have experienced closures due to weather in the past year alone. Such decisions often prioritize safety, echoing past winter storms that prompted similar responses. For instance, after a major snowstorm in 2016, many colleges adopted more flexible remote learning methods that remain in place today. Being prepared and staying informed can make all the difference during unpredictable weather.
