There’s a surprising twist in the recent deal to end the federal government shutdown: a potential ban on hemp products. This could have serious effects on the hemp industry, particularly on popular items like THC-infused drinks.
Take Surdyk’s in northeast Minneapolis, for example. Co-owner Melissa Surdyk says these THC beverages have become a hit. “We offer teas and soda-like drinks,” she shared. They account for about 10% of sales at her shop, showing significant demand. “We want to keep providing what our customers love,” she added.
However, a Senate compromise could limit THC content to just 0.4 milligrams per container. In contrast, Surdyk’s THC drinks currently have around 5 milligrams per serving. The Hemp Industry & Farmers of America warned that this change could devastate their sector, leading to restrictions on products like Delta-8 and THCA flower.
Bob Galligan, from the Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild, voiced his concerns about this proposed change. He represents over 100 local craft breweries, many of which have adapted to changes in consumer behavior by offering THC drinks as alcohol consumption declines. “If this goes through, it could really harm our industry,” he said, suggesting that the 0.4 milligram limit was deliberately low—so low it would be almost undetectable.
Interestingly, the ban won’t take effect for a year, giving people time to react and push back.
In the last few years, hemp-derived products have surged in popularity across the U.S. A recent study by the Brightfield Group found that the hemp CBD market alone is expected to reach $20 billion by 2024. These changes in regulation could shape the industry’s future drastically.
Social media reactions have also been lively. Many consumers are sharing their favorite THC products online, expressing frustration over the possible restrictions. As discussions continue, the outcome will impact both businesses and consumers.
