Hyderabad: The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has raised alarms about the increasing risks of cyberattacks fueled by advanced artificial intelligence (AI). This warning is particularly aimed at businesses, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), and individual users.
As AI technology develops, it can now autonomously spot security weaknesses, analyze code, and carry out complex attacks on systems. This means that cybercriminals can run faster and cheaper attacks that previously required skilled professionals. They can steal credentials, execute scams, disrupt services, and compromise personal information more swiftly than ever.
The advisory comes at a time when there are growing concerns about Anthropic’s Mythos. This AI model has been deemed too dangerous for public use. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently held a meeting to discuss its potential threat to India’s banking sector.
CERT-In has highlighted various AI-driven threats for organizations to watch out for:
- Large-scale vulnerability detection
- Quick exploit development
- Automated information gathering on cloud services
- AI-generated phishing attacks
- Credential theft
- Coordinated multi-stage attacks
To tackle these threats, CERT-In has shared several recommendations:
For Organizations:
- Increase security monitoring and log reviews.
- Implement DDoS protection.
- Use multi-factor authentication (MFA) for all online assets.
- Apply critical patches within 24 hours of their release.
- Review and update vulnerable legacy VPN systems.
- Act swiftly on newly disclosed vulnerabilities, treating them as exploitable within hours.
For MSMEs and Individual Users:
MSMEs should adopt low-cost measures such as updating operating systems and browsers, enforcing MFA, avoiding unverified AI tools, and offering regular cybersecurity training. Individual users are advised to:
- Use strong, unique passwords.
- Avoid apps from unverified sources.
- Stay vigilant against AI-generated deepfakes and phishing scams.
- Use VPNs when accessing public Wi-Fi for transactions.
“Keeping up with AI-driven cyber threats is essential for maintaining security,” CERT-In emphasizes. Basic cybersecurity controls must be strictly followed.
As experts emphasize the importance of cybersecurity, recent statistics reveal that cybersecurity breaches have increased 75% in the past year alone. This highlights the need for strong measures to protect both businesses and individuals from evolving threats.
