Two recent cases of measles in North Dakota are linked to Essentia Health clinics in the Fargo area, according to state health officials. Those who visited the affected clinics may have been exposed to the virus. Essentia is taking steps to keep both patients and staff safe.

This brings the total number of measles cases in North Dakota to 11 for the year, with the newly identified patients being unvaccinated. The majority of the cases are centered in Williston, Williams County.

The exposure periods were brief. One occurred at the Essentia Health clinic at The Lights in West Fargo on May 7, from 2:30 to 6 p.m. The other was at the walk-in clinic on 52nd Avenue in Fargo on May 9, between 5:30 and 8 p.m.

Dr. Stephanie Grondahl, a pediatrician with Essentia Health, emphasizes the seriousness of the situation. “Since COVID-19, we are more conscious of how viruses spread in our community,” she said. Essentia is enhancing safety measures, including screening patients before their appointments.

For those unvaccinated and exposed to measles, the state advises quarantine for 21 days. Even vaccinated individuals should watch for symptoms during this period.

Dr. Grondahl reassures the public, saying those vaccinated have strong protection against measles. She encourages continued vigilance, such as practicing good hand hygiene and wearing masks when necessary. “If you feel unwell, reach out to your healthcare provider,” she suggested.
