The FBI is looking into a troubling rise in swatting incidents at U.S. universities. As students return to campus for the new semester, around a dozen schools have faced false reports of active shooters. This has caused panic and chaotic responses from armed police.
Swatting involves making fake emergency calls to provoke a heavy police response, often involving SWAT teams. Sadly, this prank is becoming more common, and it’s alarming for students, parents, and faculty alike. The FBI has urged people to stay alert and report anything suspicious.
For example, Villanova University experienced two threats in just four days. Ava Petrosky, a student, was at an orientation Mass when chaos erupted, leading people to flee. She shared her fear, saying, “Honestly, at that moment I thought, ‘I’m gonna die.’”
Similarly, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga was locked down after a similar hoax. Senior Luke Robbins described the frantic scene as students rushed out of their classrooms, only to be met by armed officers directing them away from danger. “It was just hectic. It’s crazy,” he recalled.
Other universities affected include Iowa State, the University of Arkansas, Northern Arizona University, the University of South Carolina, Doane University, and Kansas State University. The FBI acknowledged this troubling trend and highlighted how false reports drain police resources and put lives in danger.
In response to this surge, the FBI established a database in 2023 meant to track these hoaxes more efficiently. So far, it has documented thousands of incidents. Recent statistics indicate a significant increase in swatting events nationwide.
This issue isn’t new. Historically, swatting has led to severe consequences. There have been cases where police accidentally harmed individuals during these chaotic scenarios. For instance, a British man was charged last year after a failed swatting incident in Maryland resulted in police firing plastic bullets at an innocent person.
As this alarming trend continues, the focus remains on preventing harm and protecting students. Education around the seriousness of swatting is crucial. The real cost of these pranks goes far beyond the financial burden; they endanger lives and create lasting trauma for those involved.
