NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Titans wrapped up their preseason with a 23-13 victory against the Minnesota Vikings. Rookie quarterback Cam Ward, the No. 1 overall pick, showed promise but won’t have to wait longer for his chance to shine in the regular season.
In his preseason efforts, Ward completed 10 of 19 passes for 145 yards, playing into the second quarter of each game. He had a shaky start against the Vikings, missing his first throw but quickly rebounded by completing three passes for 36 yards on a lengthy 13-play drive, which culminated in a touchdown from Julius Chestnut.
Titans coach Brian Callahan commented on the importance of protecting Ward, stating, “I wanted to limit the hits he took.” Ward is eager to prove himself when the games matter. “I want to show my skills,” he said.
Minnesota’s rookie quarterback Max Brosmer, who started the game, managed to keep things competitive. He finished with 15 completions out of 23 attempts for 161 yards and threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Bryson Nesbit. Coach Kevin O’Connell praised Brosmer for his decision-making and ability to extend plays.
The Titans made an impactful play in the second half when veteran Brandon Allen connected with Van Jefferson for a 65-yard touchdown. Jefferson, who had issues catching the ball in previous games, caught all three passes thrown his way, totaling 102 yards.
Another noteworthy moment was a bizarre interruption when a neon green sex toy was thrown onto the field. The Titans reported the incident to security.
Kicking was also a highlight of the night. Titans kicker Joey Slye nailed a 63-yarder, showcasing his impressive range. This was his sixth NFL team, and he noted, “I think I could’ve gone longer.” Slye’s kick almost hit the net, indicating he has serious power behind his leg. In contrast, Vikings kicker Will Reichard struggled, missing two field goals before finally connecting on a 58-yarder.
Looking ahead, the Titans will open their regular season in Denver on September 7, and the Vikings will face Chicago on September 8.
As the NFL prepares for its regular season, teams are eager to see what their young players can contribute. With players like Ward and Brosmer stepping up, the excitement and anticipation for the upcoming games are building.
