PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers men’s basketball has bolstered its roster with the addition of center Christian Gurdak, who is transferring from Virginia Tech for the upcoming 2025-26 season.
Standing at 6-foot-10, Gurdak made a significant impact during his freshman year in Blacksburg. He played in 31 games, starting in 10, and averaged 5.6 points and 4.4 rebounds. His shooting percentage was impressive at 63.2%, highlighting his ability to score and rebound effectively.
“It felt like a perfect fit,” Gurdak said about his move to Rutgers. “I really like the area and the school. The arena has a gritty vibe. I believe I can bring toughness and rebounding to Rutgers.”
Head coach Steve Pikiell echoed this sentiment: “Christian adds size and determination to our frontcourt. He’s shown he can rebound at a high level and plays efficiently. We’re excited about the experience he brings.”
Gurdak, a West Virginia native who was born in Germany, had standout performances, including a double-double against No. 21 Virginia, where he scored 17 points and grabbed 19 rebounds. Notably, that 19-rebound performance was the highest for an ACC player that season, achieved during a thrilling triple-overtime game.
“I’m going to be physical and focus on rebounding,” Gurdak explained. “I love playing in the paint but want to expand my range.” His efficiency was evident in games where he shot perfectly, including a flawless 4-for-4 against Georgia Tech.
Before joining Virginia Tech, Gurdak was a highly regarded player, earning a consensus four-star rating and performing well at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. He led his team to a WCAC title game and garnered All-WCAC First Team honors.
Gurdak also gained valuable experience playing for Team Takeover in the Nike EYBL circuit, where he helped his team win the 16U Peach Jam title and reach the 17U Final Four. He was recognized on the second-team All-Peach Jam in 2024.
Rated as the No. 114 prospect in his class by 247Sports, he chose Virginia Tech over other offers, including those from Notre Dame and Clemson. Gurdak plans to major in communication or marketing while aiming for a professional basketball career afterward.
As Gurdak looks ahead, he says, “Rutgers Nation, you’re getting a center dedicated to building on the legacy of great centers. I’m here to play hard and embody the spirit of New Jersey.”
This addition comes at a pivotal time for Rutgers, a team that has been making strides in the competitive Big Ten Conference. With Gurdak on board, fans are eager to see how his skills will elevate the team in the coming season.
