LAWRENCE — Five educators at the University of Kansas have been honored as University Distinguished Professors for their outstanding work in research and teaching. This title is a significant recognition of their hard work and commitment to scholarship.

The new Distinguished Professors, effective from the fall 2025 semester, include:

• Raj Bhala, School of Law
• Jeffrey Burns, School of Medicine
• Hyunjin Seo, William Allen White School of Journalism & Mass Communications
• Debra Sullivan, School of Health Professions
• Russell Swerdlow, School of Medicine

Barbara A. Bichelmeyer, provost, praised these faculty members as inspirations within the KU community. Their achievements demonstrate not just teaching excellence but a real impact in their fields.

Selection for this honor is based solely on merit. Candidates are nominated by their departments, and a university committee reviews these nominations. Key factors include research contributions, involvement in university and community affairs, and support for students and colleagues.

At the KU Medical Center, faculty nominations come through departmental votes. This distinction recognizes those who demonstrate sustained contributions in research, education, and community health.

Meet the 2025 Distinguished Professors

Raj Bhala

Bhala is an expert in law and literature, focusing on international trade law. He has authored 13 books and over 100 scholarly articles. His influential textbook series on International Trade Law is widely respected.

Hyunjin Seo

Seo holds the Oscar Stauffer Chair at the School of Journalism. Her research, which has received over $6 million in funding, explores how digital media impacts social networks and community engagement. She’s authored more than 70 peer-reviewed articles and a book on collective actions.

Jeffrey Burns

As co-director of the KU Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, Burns concentrates on understanding lifestyle impacts on brain health and Alzheimer’s. His program has been funded by the NIH since 2005, and he has advised many junior researchers.

Debra Sullivan

Sullivan chairs the Department of Dietetics & Nutrition. Her work includes dietary assessment and obesity prevention, attracting over $8 million in funding. She has authored 145 publications and is an award-winning mentor.

Russell Swerdlow

Swerdlow directs research into Alzheimer’s disease and brain metabolism. His work has garnered several prestigious awards, and he serves on advisory committees for various biomedical organizations. He’s focused on therapeutic approaches to brain energy metabolism.
