As Colorado’s temperatures fall, many families feel the pinch. The Food Bank of the Rockies is seeing a growing number of people needing help. They’re caught in a tough spot: Should they pay their heating bills or buy food?
The food bank’s mobile pantries are crucial for many. “You can see the relief on their faces,” says Brandon Beard, a mobile pantry specialist. “It helps them get through another day.”
Jimmy Smith has turned to food banks for years. He manages a fixed income and says the money only stretches so far. For him, the tough choices of paying bills or buying groceries are all too familiar.
Then there’s Anna Vander Linden. She’s never visited a food bank before but found herself in a difficult situation after an accident. “I can’t really drive to the grocery store. It’s tough with this weather,” she shared.
As winter bites, the Food Bank of the Rockies works to meet the increased demand, focusing their efforts on areas most in need. The cold makes it even harder for those without stable housing. “The cold really affects people,” Beard adds.
With rising costs for heating and food, budgeting is a challenge. Smith expresses his struggle, saying, “I make excuses all the time to pay my bills. I ask, ‘Can I pay this much now and the rest later?'”

Despite these challenges, the food bank volunteers offer not just meals but also warmth and support. “We’re not just about providing food. We want to help people thrive,” Beard explains.
