Steam Deck Update: Enjoy Uninterrupted Gaming as Valve Finally Turns Off the Screen During Downloads!

Valve is introducing a neat feature for the Steam Deck. Soon, you won’t need to keep the screen on to finish downloads. This change is part of the latest update in the Beta and Preview channels, allowing the device to enter a low-power mode while downloads continue.

Many users have expressed the same wish: they want to save battery while downloading updates and games. In fact, after the Steam Deck OLED launched two years ago, this question was raised by The Verge. Back then, Valve thought the system worked fine as it was.

Yazan Aldehayyat, a hardware engineer at Valve, mentioned the high power usage during downloads. He warned that leaving a hot Steam Deck in a bag could be a concern if someone mistook it for being asleep. The new feature seems to address that problem.

Now, when you press the power button during a download, a prompt will pop up. This allows you to decide if you want to continue the download with the screen off. If you select “Continue,” your Steam Deck will shift into low-power mode. The best part? If you tap a button or move the device, you can see the download progress, and you can choose to wake it fully or let it keep downloading with the display turned off.

This feature activates automatically when the Steam Deck is plugged in. Users can also enable it while on battery, but if the battery runs low—below 20%—the device will enter full sleep mode.

Recent statistics indicate that 74% of gamers prefer devices that optimize battery life without reducing functionality. This suggests that Valve’s decision aligns with what players want today. As gaming technology continues to evolve, features like this highlight how companies are listening to user feedback and adapting to meet their needs.
