Steam Enhances Stadia Controller Compatibility as Google’s Deadline Approaches

Google’s Stadia gaming platform may have shut down over three years ago, but the Stadia Controller still has a place in the gaming world. Recently, Steam has made improvements to better support this controller.

Steam now allows the Stadia Controller to connect seamlessly, even with generic controller settings off. Initially, users had to enable this feature manually, but it now works out of the box. While it’s still labeled as a “Generic Gamepad,” the enhancements are noticeable.

New features include:

  • The Google Assistant button can now serve as a programmable macro.
  • The screenshot button captures images, at least on SteamOS.
  • The Stadia button functions like an Xbox button, accessing Steam Big Picture and shortcuts effortlessly.

However, not everything is perfect. Certain features, like auto shut-off or audio through the headphone jack, are still problematic. As of now, rumble functionality over Bluetooth is also missing.

The Stadia Controller’s usability is crucial, especially as the official conversion tool is set to close on December 31, 2025. This tool allows users to turn their Stadia Controllers into Bluetooth devices. After initial deadlines, Google extended the usage period, but uncertainty looms over any future extensions.

Interestingly, many players have expressed mixed feelings on social media. Some celebrate the newfound compatibility, while others see the looming deadline as a frustrating reminder of the controller’s uncertain future. According to a recent survey on gaming device usage, around 20% of gamers reported using older controllers for new systems, highlighting a trend in retro gaming.

In a 2023 report, it was noted that some popular Steam games, such as *Risk of Rain 2*, struggled with the Stadia Controller. But recent updates have resolved such issues, showcasing Steam’s commitment to improving user experience.

The Stadia Controller’s fate hangs in the balance, and for gamers still holding onto it, now is the time to get it ready for its next chapter.
