Taking a different approach, the Steelers opted for experience in McCarthy. He has already coached the Green Bay Packers for 13 seasons and the Dallas Cowboys for five, leading the Packers to a Super Bowl win against the Steelers back in 2011. During his time with Green Bay, quarterback Aaron Rodgers thrived and won two of his four MVP awards under McCarthy’s guidance.
Interestingly, McCarthy has strong ties to Pittsburgh. His father was a firefighter in the city, and McCarthy spent part of his early career working at the University of Pittsburgh. These local roots might help him connect with the fans and players alike.
McCarthy’s coaching record stands out: 174 wins and 112 losses, including 12 playoff appearances. His time in Dallas saw him win two NFC East titles and six NFC North crowns with the Packers. Given the Steelers’ recent struggles, his leadership will be critical in fostering a winning culture again.
Despite the Steelers being known for stability under the Rooney family’s ownership, the team has not won a Super Bowl since the 2008 season and has not tasted playoff success since 2016. This past season ended a streak of no losing records under Tomlin, but McCarthy will have the tough job of restoring hope to a fan base eager for victories.
Owner Art Rooney II has made it clear: the Steelers aim to be competitive from day one, moving away from the term “rebuild.” This determination indicates high expectations for McCarthy in the upcoming seasons.
