MORGAN — Aubrey Steffl has hit the ground running in her basketball journey. She started playing for Cedar Mountain in seventh grade and is already making history.
On Friday, she scored 22 points, breaking a scoring record that had stood since 1991. Now, she has 1,631 career points, along with impressive stats: 749 rebounds, 451 assists, and 336 steals—all in her sophomore year.
“I never thought I’d reach this,” Steffl said. “It feels great, especially since I have two more years to play. I wasn’t nervous about breaking the record; it’s just exciting to have achieved it.”
Steffl’s journey really took off during her eighth-grade season. Now a starter, she averaged 18.7 points per game and was named to the All-Journal First Team last year. As a freshman, she continued strong with an average of 18.8 points and earned All-Journal Second Team recognition.
Hitting 1,000 career points as a freshman is impressive for any player, yet Steffl managed to do it early in her high school career. She has two All-Conference nominations so far.
Steffl credits her success to her teammates and role models at Cedar Mountain. “They’re a huge part of my journey. I have worked hard with my parents and have played travel ball, which contributed to my progress,” she shared.
This season, she is averaging 25 points per game. But she recognizes that improving her assists has been key. “My assists were low last year, and I wanted to help my teammates more,” she explained. “I also wanted to get better at rebounding.”
Her efforts have paid off. Steffl leads her division with 11.4 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game, all while boosting her scoring. She’s achieved four triple-doubles this season, highlighting her all-around game.
“It’s about my teammates too. I always let them know that if I have the ball, I’ll find them,” she said. “I don’t even realize when I get a triple-double; I’m just focused on winning.”
The Cougars have a solid 12-5 record, and Steffl has big goals for the rest of the season. “I want to keep playing my best and support my team. We need to show up and work hard together,” she emphasized.
