Stellantis Pulls the Plug on Ram 1500 REV: What Declining Electric Truck Demand Means for the Future

Stellantis has decided to keep the Ramcharger name, but it will now be called the Ram 1500 REV. This new pickup is expected to raise the bar in the half-ton truck market with impressive range and towing capabilities.

This announcement comes after recent changes in leadership at Stellantis. CEO Carlos Tavares resigned amid declining sales. The company has faced criticism for neglecting its US brands and not offering more affordable models.

The Ramcharger and Ram 1500 REV will be built on a versatile platform designed for various powertrains, including electric, gas, and hybrid. This platform is impressive, allowing for a range of up to 690 miles on a full charge and tank.

However, Stellantis isn’t alone in delaying or canceling electric vehicle (EV) plans. Many automakers are pausing their production due to changes in federal tax credits and incentives aimed at boosting sales. With incentives fading, companies are reportedly cautious about future sales.

Electrifying larger trucks poses its own challenges. These vehicles often require bigger, heavier batteries, significantly increasing costs. Sales of electric trucks, like the Ford F-150 Lightning and Tesla Cybertruck, have been slower than predicted. The weight of loads can also reduce their range, making it hard to convince truck buyers to switch to electric.

According to a recent survey from AutoTrader, 62% of truck owners still prefer traditional gasoline-powered vehicles over electric options. This adds pressure on companies to innovate and improve the capabilities of their electric trucks if they want to compete in a saturated market.

As the market evolves, Stellantis and other manufacturers will need to adapt quickly to meet consumer demands and navigate the changing landscape of the automotive industry.
