Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel had a lot to say about the numbers surrounding the new documentary on Melania Trump. Titled Melania: Twenty Days to History, it surprised many by making $7 million at the box office. This was much more than the $1 to $5 million some expected.
Colbert quickly pointed out, though, that this figure needs context. “That $7 million is just a tiny slice of the $75 million Amazon spent on it,” he noted on The Late Show. “And remember, she herself was paid at least $28 million. That’s a lot of cash for a not-so-great opening.” He even had someone impersonate Melania to give humorous insights about the film.
Kimmel chimed in during his own show, calling attention to the movie’s low rating. “It has just a 5 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes,” he said, “which is worse than the infamous Gigli.” However, fans seemed to love it, giving it a 99 percent audience score. “I guess some folks really enjoyed it,” Kimmel speculated.
Both hosts didn’t shy away from criticizing how Amazon is presenting the film’s numbers. Kimmel joked, “Claiming it’s the best nonmusical documentary opening in 14 years is just a fancy way of saying they lost a ton of money.” He even joked about a potential conspiracy where Republican groups might have bought lots of tickets to inflate the numbers.
An insight from film analysts suggests that while the documentary’s opening looks impressive, it may not reflect true public interest. A recent survey showed that many people are skeptical of political documentaries, especially those tied to controversial figures. This lack of trust could explain the stark contrast between critics’ and audiences’ opinions.
In a world where numbers can be manipulated for headlines, it’s essential to question what they really mean. As Kimmel highlighted, context is key. Without the full picture, we might miss the real story behind the numbers. You can watch Colbert’s segment here and Kimmel’s take here.
