Stephen Colbert is moving from late-night comedy to Middle-earth. After wrapping up his time as host of The Late Show in May, he’s set to write a new Lord of the Rings film called The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past.
Peter Jackson, the director of the beloved Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies, recently announced this exciting news on social media. Colbert has long been a huge fan of J.R.R. Tolkien. In fact, he even made a cameo in Jackson’s 2013 film, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, alongside his family.
According to Deadline, this new film will be a fresh chapter set 14 years after Frodo’s departure. The story will follow Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they revisit their old adventures. At the same time, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, uncovers a hidden secret that could explain why the War of the Ring almost faltered at its beginning.
Colbert was inspired to craft this storyline after rereading The Fellowship of the Ring. He focused on parts of the book that didn’t make it into Jackson’s films, particularly the early chapters. He shared his thoughts with Jackson, expressing a desire to create something that remains true to both the books and the films.
