Stephen King is taking a stand this year regarding the Academy Awards. He has decided not to vote and believes the event shouldn’t even take place.
On Thursday, the famous horror author shared his thoughts on Bluesky. He wrote, “Not voting in the Oscars this year. IMHO they should cancel them. No glitz with Los Angeles on fire.”
King’s comments come during a tough time for Hollywood, as the community is dealing with serious wildfires in and around Los Angeles.
In response to the ongoing crisis, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has extended the voting deadline for the Oscars to January 17 and pushed back the nominations announcement to January 23.
King isn’t alone in this sentiment. Other celebrities, like actresses Jean Smart and Patricia Arquette, have also suggested that awards season should be put on hold due to the wildfires.
Some argue that holding events like the Oscars and Grammys could bring a little positivity during these hard times. However, King disagrees.
In another post on Bluesky, he acknowledged the opposing view. He said, “I hear what you guys are saying about the Oscars, and how they’re a celebration of life…but to me it still feels like Nero fiddling while Rome burns. Or in this case, wearing fancy clothes while LA burns.”
Despite the ongoing troubles, both the Grammys and Oscars are still scheduled to take place on February 2 and March 2, respectively.
