In a big push for environmental care, Sterling One Foundation, along with Sterling Bank and several partners, has launched a nationwide cleanup in Nigeria. This effort is part of the United Nations Decade of Action and involves 17 states, including bustling locations like Wuse Market in Abuja and Alpha Beach in Lagos.
This initiative highlights the importance of community action against plastic pollution and waste. Hundreds of volunteers, environmental specialists, youth groups, and government staff joined forces to clear trash, promote recycling, and encourage smart waste disposal.
Tunde Akande from Sterling Bank emphasized the role of local participation in keeping cities clean. He said the collaboration in Abuja showcases both communal responsibility and pride in maintaining a healthy environment.
Braimah Osilama from the Abuja Environmental Protection Board also pointed out the significance of teamwork in this project. He noted that the dedication of these volunteers is key to achieving sustainable environmental improvements. It’s not just about cleaning up; it’s about building a culture of awareness and involvement.
At the beach cleanup in Lagos, Akporee Idenedo from Sterling Bank noted the impressive spirit among residents and stakeholders. He reaffirmed their commitment to initiatives that enhance public spaces and improve the quality of life for Nigerian communities. Their Sterling Environmental Makeover (STEM) program, which has been active for over ten years, continues to focus on sustainability.
Olapeju Ibekwe, CEO of Sterling One Foundation, expressed pride in the collective effort. “This nationwide initiative shows what we can achieve together. Every volunteer, no matter how small their contribution, is part of shaping a cleaner, healthier Nigeria.”
In line with these efforts, recent research indicates that community-led environmental actions can significantly boost public awareness. A survey revealed that 70% of participants who joined cleanup events reported a greater understanding of recycling practices. This shows the power of hands-on involvement in fostering lasting change.
