Steuben County Woman Arrested for Misusing Food Stamps and Possessing Stolen Goods: What You Need to Know

A woman from Steuben County is facing serious charges for allegedly misusing someone else’s food stamp benefits. Kayla A. Swift, 25, from Bath, was arrested on April 16 and is now in Steuben County Jail.

According to Sheriff Jim Allard, Swift reportedly used a benefit card issued by the Steuben County Department of Social Services from December 1 to December 3 of last year. Investigators claim she accessed public assistance that she wasn’t entitled to.

She has been charged with Misuse of Food Stamps, Petit Larceny, and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fourth Degree, a class E felony. Swift is expected to appear in Centralized Arraignment Court and will stay in custody while the case proceeds.

Sheriff Allard praised the collaborative efforts of the Department of Social Services Fraud and Legal Affairs Unit, Bath Police Department, and the District Attorney’s Office, which played key roles in the investigation.

The misuse of food stamps and other public assistance programs has been a growing concern across the nation. According to a 2022 report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), fraud rates in food assistance programs have risen slightly, even as overall participation has increased due to economic challenges.
