Stock futures rose slightly on Monday. Investors remain cautious about President Trump’s upcoming tariffs on trade partners. Futures for the Dow Jones climbed 47 points. The S&P 500 saw a 0.2% increase, and Nasdaq 100 futures gained 0.25%.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick mentioned on Fox News that the tariffs on Mexico and Canada, set to start on Tuesday, could change. They might be lower than the 25% proposed. However, he confirmed that the 10% duty on imports from China is fixed.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Mexico has offered to match the U.S. tariffs on China. This move could help them avoid the new tariffs.

Warren Buffett, the well-known investor, also weighed in on tariffs. He cautioned that they could increase inflation and negatively impact consumers. He referred to tariffs as a type of war tactic and stated, “They’re a tax on goods. The Tooth Fairy doesn’t pay ’em!”

The uncertainty surrounding trade policies has contributed to recent market volatility. In February, all three major stock indexes reported losses. The S&P 500 dropped by 1.4%, the Dow declined by 1.6%, and the Nasdaq saw a significant 4% decrease, marking its worst month since April 2024.

Chris Rupkey, chief economist at FWDBONDS, pointed out that tariffs could shock the economy. He said it remains to be seen how the stock market will cope with these changes.

Meanwhile, cryptocurrencies surged on Sunday. This was sparked by Trump announcing a strategic crypto reserve for the U.S., which will include Bitcoin and Ether. Bitcoin rose by 10%, reaching nearly $94,000, after slipping below $80,000 just days before.

This week is packed with important news, including the February jobs report expected on Friday. Analysts predict it will show a slowdown in job creation.
