Stock Futures Surge at 2026 Kickoff: Tech Shares Continue 2025 Momentum – Live Updates Inside!

Traders at the New York Stock Exchange marked a promising start to 2026 as stock futures climbed on the first trading day of the year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average futures rose by 192 points, or about 0.4%. Meanwhile, S&P 500 futures increased by 0.6%, and Nasdaq-100 futures enjoyed a solid 1% gain.

Historically, the first trading day hasn’t always been a winner for investors. The S&P 500 has closed lower on the first day for the past three years. In fact, going back to the 1950s, there’s not a clear trend; around 48% of first trading days finish positively, according to Bespoke Investment Group.

In premarket trading, shares of Nvidia and Palantir Technologies saw notable increases, each rising by over 1% and 2%, respectively. These companies were standout performers in 2025, with Nvidia up 39% and Palantir surging 135%. Big names like Apple, Alphabet, and Microsoft also saw their stocks climb higher.

The tech sector was a major driver of market success in 2025. The S&P 500 gained more than 16%, marking its third consecutive year of growth. The Nasdaq Composite jumped over 20%, while the Dow climbed around 13%. This surge came amid excitement around artificial intelligence and support from central banks cutting interest rates.

Market experts have mixed feelings about the potential for 2026. A recent CNBC Market Strategist Survey suggested an optimistic outlook with an average target of 7,629 for the S&P 500, which implies an 11.4% increase. However, uncertainties linger. Deutsche Bank strategists noted that while the gains were significant, the market faced considerable volatility, particularly following tariff announcements last April.

As this new trading year unfolds, the focus remains on tech and artificial intelligence’s role in shaping the market. Investors will be watching closely to see whether the upward momentum continues or if unforeseen challenges arise.
