Africa and China are forming strong ties to improve agriculture and fight food insecurity. African Union officials, like Patrick Ndzana Olomo, emphasize that collaboration in these areas is crucial.
Olomo, who works on economic development at the AU, recently noted how both regions benefit by sharing knowledge and technology. “Africa and China are teaming up for inclusive agriculture, which is vital for food security,” he explained during a visit to an urban agriculture center in Addis Ababa.
With about 60% of the world’s arable land, Africa aims to become a major food producer. Olomo says China can help by sharing modern farming techniques and solutions for climate change challenges. This partnership is seen as a strategic move for sustainable development across the continent.
Patience Mhuriro-Mashapa, an agriculture expert at the AU, highlighted how Chinese experts collaborate with African farmers to improve agricultural practices. She noted that China’s climate-smart agriculture can help mitigate climate issues. “Using technologies like greenhouses can be beneficial for African farmers,” she said.
In Addis Ababa, officials like Melese Anshebo shared how the integration of new technologies, such as diverse seedlings and greenhouses, can lead to better farming outcomes. These innovations can reduce poverty and enhance food security in Africa.
Recent statistics show that widespread food insecurity affects millions in Africa. According to the World Food Programme, nearly 345 million people faced hunger in 2022, highlighting the urgent need for solutions like the Africa-China partnership.
Overall, the cooperation between Africa and China in agriculture is not just a collaboration; it’s a vital strategy for transforming food systems, ensuring sustainable development, and fighting hunger across the continent.
