Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth, recently visited Tanzania and met with the country’s Defence Minister, Stergomena Lawrence Tax, to discuss strengthening ties in various areas. This meeting took place on April 14 in Dar es Salaam and focused particularly on bolstering cooperation in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism efforts.
In highlighting the ongoing defense partnership, both leaders explored new avenues for collaboration. Topics included training Tanzanian military personnel in Indian military institutes, defense industry partnerships, and cooperation on cybersecurity.
Additionally, the two countries launched the harbor phase of the Indian Navy’s first Africa India Key Maritime Engagement (AIKEYME) exercise, aiming to improve maritime security. This naval exercise, co-hosted by India and Tanzania, also includes participation from other African nations like Kenya and South Africa.
Seth emphasized the importance of unity among nations to tackle maritime challenges and secure a peaceful future. He reiterated India’s commitment to supporting the Tanzanian People’s Defence Force and enhancing bilateral relations. Discussions included cultural and educational partnerships, reflecting a broader commitment to mutual development.
While visiting, Seth also engaged with the Indian diaspora, sharing insights about India’s progress and celebrating Ambedkar Jayanti at the Indian High Commission. His interactions underscored the positive impact of the Indian community in Tanzania, reinforcing the cultural bonds between the two countries.
Recent statistics show that as of 2023, the trade volume between India and Tanzania has increased significantly, highlighting the growing economic ties. According to a report by the Ministry of Commerce, trade reached over $4 billion last year, showcasing the potential for deeper collaboration in various sectors.
These developments not only enhance military cooperation but also pave the way for a more connected and prosperous future for both nations. The commitment to joint exercises and partnerships signals a step forward in strengthening security in the Indian Ocean region, reaffirming the ties between India and its African partners.
