LANGKAWI, Malaysia, 4 September 2025 – ASEAN and Japan came together for the 3rd ASEAN–Japan Ministerial Dialogue on Environment and Climate Change (AJMDEC) in Langkawi. The gathering included ministers, officials, and representatives aiming to tackle environmental and climate challenges effectively.

During the meeting, participants assessed ongoing collaborations and outlined future goals that align with global and regional sustainability targets. Both sides stressed the urgent need for climate resilience, low-carbon development, and sustainable strategies across different sectors.

ASEAN Secretary-General Dr. Kao Kim Hourn highlighted the role of the ASEAN–Japan partnership in addressing significant environmental concerns. He also praised Japan’s commitment through the Strategic Program for ASEAN Climate and Environment (SPACE), which supports member states in climate adaptation and mitigation.

Japan reaffirmed its support for the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, which emphasizes sustainability and resilience in long-term development. Initiatives include technical assistance, knowledge sharing, and green investments targeted at enhancing environmental efforts in the region.

A recent survey found that over 70% of citizens in ASEAN countries prioritize climate action as essential for their governments. This underscores the growing expectation for collaborative solutions to protect the environment.
