As Brazil’s Defence Minister heads to India this October, exciting discussions are set to unfold in the aerospace and defence sectors. The focus will be on two major projects: the Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) and India’s Akash missile system.
This visit is crucial for India. With global trade tensions on the rise, India aims to reduce its reliance on traditional defence suppliers. Strengthening partnerships with Brazil fits neatly into this strategy.
### Spotlight on the C-390 Millennium
A key player in these discussions is the C-390 Millennium, a military transport aircraft designed by Brazil’s Embraer. India is looking to potentially add this aircraft to its fleet. Embraer has responded to India’s Request for Information, suggesting a deal for up to 80 planes, each costing about $150 million. If this deal goes through, it could be one of Embraer’s biggest international contracts.
To deepen ties with India, Embraer has opened a subsidiary in New Delhi’s AeroCity, aiming to contribute to India’s aerospace industry. The move aligns with India’s “Make in India” initiative, which promotes local manufacturing. Francisco Gomes Neto, the President of Embraer, emphasized the importance of the Indian market, noting their commitment to India’s technological growth.
An important development was an MoU signed with Mahindra Defence Systems last year, aimed at co-developing the C-390 in India.
### Akash Missile on Brazil’s Radar
Meanwhile, India’s Akash missile system, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is also catching Brazil’s interest. It has been shortlisted for Brazil’s air defense system initiative, competing mainly with China’s Sky Dragon 50.
Although recent talks between Indian and Brazilian leaders didn’t specifically mention the Akash system, Brazilian officials have described it as “technically sound.” Yet, progress has been slow. Budget and technical issues have been cited, alongside pressure from competitors in Israel and France.
Interestingly, Brazil insists that discussions about the Akash missile and the C-390 are separate. Any delays in the Akash negotiations won’t impact how India evaluates Embraer’s offer.
### Looking Ahead
The upcoming ministerial trip is preparing the groundwork for a more extensive partnership as Brazil prepares for President Lula’s visit to India in 2026. Vice President Geraldo Alckmin will also be in India this October, discussing various sectors including defence, energy, and digital inclusion.
Furthermore, collaboration between Brazilian arms companies, like Taurus Armas S.A. and CBC, with Indian firms, is growing. They aim to engage in joint manufacturing, enhancing the defence synergy between the two nations.
### Expanding Cooperation
Beyond defence, Brazil and India are exploring partnerships in naval platforms and small arms. They even have joint programs for submarine operations, which focus on shared training with the Scorpène-class submarines.
Embraer’s commercial aviation business is also getting involved. The company’s E-Jet family of aircraft is already being used by Star Air for regional connectivity in India, helping serve areas that larger airplanes can’t efficiently reach.
The Brazilian Defence Minister’s visit could be a pivotal moment for the future of India-Brazil relations, as both countries look to strengthen their defence and aerospace cooperation while embracing new challenges and opportunities.
