Strengthening Naval Power: How ‘Androth’ Enhances India’s Maritime Dominance in the Indian Ocean

New Delhi: The Indian Navy has added a powerful new anti-submarine warfare ship to its fleet. This move comes as China has been increasingly active in the Indian Ocean, raising maritime concerns.

Named ‘Androth,’ this ship is the second of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASW SWCs), built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata. Its delivery marks a significant step toward India’s goal of self-reliance in defense manufacturing.

The name ‘Androth’ comes from an island in the Lakshadweep archipelago. It symbolizes India’s commitment to protecting its marine borders, showcasing the nation’s resolve in a strategically critical area.

These ASW ships are designed with modern technology to enhance the Navy’s anti-submarine capabilities. They are vital for coastal surveillance and mine-laying operations. At around 77 meters long, they are the largest Indian naval vessels powered by a Diesel Engine-Waterjet system. They come equipped with advanced lightweight torpedoes, indigenous ASW rockets, and cutting-edge shallow water SONAR. This technology enables effective submarine detection and engagement in coastal waters.

Experts agree that enhancing anti-submarine warfare is crucial as maritime conflicts evolve. According to a recent report by the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the Indo-Pacific region is becoming increasingly competitive, with submarines playing a pivotal role. The addition of Androth strengthens India’s position in this intricate landscape.

Furthermore, the delivery of this ship supports the government’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat,’ or self-reliant India, featuring over 80% indigenous content. It reflects the country’s growing manufacturing capabilities and a shift towards reducing reliance on foreign imports for defense needs.

As global tensions rise, the significance of such advancements can’t be overstated. Androth represents a step forward in modernizing India’s naval capabilities and securing its maritime interests.
