Strengthening Ties: Mongolia and South Korea Join Forces to Combat Climate Change

Ulaanbaatar Updates: Key Meeting on Environmental Initiatives

On August 19, 2025, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Batbaatar Bat met with Ambassador Choi Jin-won from South Korea. They discussed progress and future plans for the “Green Wall” project, a collaborative effort aimed at combating desertification in Mongolia.

Minister Bat expressed gratitude for South Korea’s ongoing support, particularly for the upcoming third phase of the project. This initiative has been vital in reducing yellow dust storms and enhancing reforestation efforts across the region. By introducing advanced technologies, South Korea has significantly contributed to Mongolia’s “Billions of Trees” National Movement, creating new opportunities for sustainable collaboration.

The two officials also talked about enhancing cooperation in climate change strategies, mine rehabilitation, and improving environmental monitoring. Minister Bat provided an update on preparations for the upcoming COP17 conference, highlighting Mongolia’s plans to address key issues such as pasture and water management, ecosystem restoration, and afforestation.

With climate change becoming a pressing global concern, the significance of this partnership cannot be overstated. According to recent data from the Global Climate Report, Mongolia faces an alarming rate of desertification, affecting more than 70% of its territory. The cooperation between Mongolia and South Korea may serve as a roadmap for other nations facing similar challenges.

As both nations aim to intensify their collaboration, the focus will be not just on local action, but also on global initiatives that address mutual concerns. This meeting marks a critical step in strengthening environmental efforts and showcases a commitment to sustainable development in the region.
