Haiti and Taiwan Discuss Environmental Cooperation
This week, Haiti’s Environment Minister, Moïse Fils Jean Pierre, met with Cheng-Hao Hu, Taiwan’s Ambassador, to explore cooperation in environmental initiatives. Joining them were Taiwanese counselors Jyr-Gen Wu and Hong-Chi Cheng. Their talks emphasized a shared commitment to enhancing climate action and environmental management in Haiti.
One of the main topics of discussion was the establishment of the Designated National Authority for the Clean Development Mechanism (ANDH-CDM). This initiative aims to open doors to clean technologies and green financing, impacting critical sectors like energy, agriculture, and construction.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of supporting gender-responsive local development. This approach ensures that climate issues are woven into strategies for economic growth and poverty reduction. Additionally, improving training for Ministry officials was recognized as vital for enhancing the effectiveness of environmental interventions.
This collaboration includes plans to install new solar photovoltaic pumps in the Grand Sud region, which will provide communities severely affected by climate change with sustainable access to water.
Taiwan is also backing Haiti’s participation in the Bonn Climate Change Conference (SB62) scheduled for June 16-26, 2025. This event is pivotal for planning the upcoming COP30 in Brazil, where global voices on climate issues gather. Minister Jean Pierre expressed his eagerness to strengthen this partnership to boost Haiti’s climate resilience and sustainable development efforts.
Experts emphasize the necessity of international cooperation in tackling climate challenges. According to the Global Climate Risk Index, Haiti ranks among the most vulnerable countries to climate change. Collaborative projects like these not only aid immediate needs but also contribute to Haiti’s long-term ecological and economic stability.
