Fresno, California, is facing tough times. Rising prices for gas, groceries, and living expenses are making it harder for many families to get by.
Desmond Camacho, who helps run City Center, sees the impact every day. “We’re noticing more families coming to our kitchen,” he shares. Many are struggling due to job loss, higher bills, or increased rent. It can be overwhelming to think about how to pay for everything.
CC’s Kitchen, named for Cecilia de Ruiz Miller, embodies the spirit of service. She dedicated her life to helping those in need, and Camacho aims to keep that legacy alive. “We want our guests to feel cared for, just like CC did,” he says.
This year alone, the City Center plans to distribute over one million meals. They offer hot meals, with a few hundred served each evening. An additional grab-and-go counter makes it easier for people to get what they need.
The volunteer efforts are incredible. Each year, around 10,000 to 14,000 volunteers lend a hand. This food ministry is critical; it helps the City Center reach more people who need support. “It allows them to feel safe and cared for, rather than just surviving,” Camacho explains.
In a recent survey from the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 30% of Americans reported worrying about food security. Volunteering or hosting food drives can make a difference. Every contribution helps, and it’s a chance for the community to come together and show care.
