FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The Oklahoma men’s track and field team has kicked off the NCAA West Preliminary Round. A standout moment came when Kennedy Stringfellow secured his place in the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Stringfellow earned his spot by finishing ninth in the men’s long jump, achieving a distance of 7.76m (25’5.50″). This was a significant achievement, especially considering he entered the meet with a strong mark of 8.07m earlier this season.
He’s not alone—Angel Richmore, a heptathlete, also qualified for the Championships earlier this week. This adds excitement for the Sooners as they build their presence on the national stage.
In other events, Ronald Ngetich narrowly missed qualifying for the men’s 10,000 meters, finishing 15th with a time of 29:08.89. Thobias Cheruiyot crossed the finish line in 29:44.19, taking 35th place. On the track, sophomore Samuel Toili placed 31st in the men’s 400 meters, clocking in at 46.55 seconds.
The women’s team will start their competition on Thursday morning at 9 a.m. CT with Kennedy Clarke participating in the women’s hammer throw. A men’s pole vault event was rescheduled due to weather and will now take place at 2:40 p.m. CT on Thursday.
Fans can follow live results through Flash Results, and ESPN+ coverage will begin at 6 p.m. CT.
This year, more students are participating in track events across the U.S., with an increase reported in college track enrollment. According to a study by the NCAA, about 36,000 men and women compete in track at the collegiate level. This growth reflects a rising interest in athletics among youth, encouraging more schools to enhance their sports programs.
As track and field gains popularity, there’s a noticeable community aspect. Engaging with fans online, like following teams on social media, has become essential for schools. This interaction creates a sense of belonging, drawing more attention to the athletes and their accomplishments.
The Oklahoma Track & Field team is making waves in the athletics world. Their journey at the NCAA will be closely watched by fans, eager to see how far they can go.
