Striving for Victory: Murray State Racers Face Challenges in Overcoming Second-Place Finishes

The Murray State Racers faced off against the Valparaiso Beacons and lost 3-1 on Saturday at ARC Arena in Indiana. This loss keeps the Racers (3-14, 1-7 MVC) at the bottom of the Missouri Valley Conference, while the Beacons (16-5, 7-1 MVC) are on a winning streak, climbing to second place.

The match started well for the Racers, who took an early 5-1 lead in the first set. They managed to secure a win with a score of 25-22, benefiting from 12 errors by Valparaiso. However, the Beacons bounced back strong in the second set, improving their hitting percentage significantly to win 25-17. They carried this momentum into the third set, taking it 25-19 for a 2-1 lead. Despite a competitive effort in the fourth set, the Racers fell short, losing 25-22.

Lily Burnett shone for the Racers, racking up 15 kills, a season high. Ella Vogel and Haidi Miliou contributed with nine kills each. Paige Brock led the team with 20 assists, while Katie Titus provided 19 assists. Freshman libero Samantha Nelson made 14 digs, and Morgan McClure stood out defensively with eight blocks.

On the Beacons side, Sam Warren led the charge with 22 kills. Addy Kois had an impressive 32 assists, and Emma Hickey was a defensive wall with 23 digs.

Looking ahead, the Racers will return to Racer Arena for two matches against the Bradley Braves and the Evansville Aces on October 24 and 25. Both games will be streamed live on ESPN+.
