Study Reveals How Climate Change Intensifies Deadly Wildfires: Latest Insights You Need to Know

ATHENS, Greece — This summer, wildfires swept across Turkey, Greece, and Cyprus, fueled by extreme heat and dry conditions. A recent study from World Weather Attribution (WWA) reveals that climate change significantly intensified these fires, making them 22% stronger than in previous years. Tragically, these wildfires claimed 20 lives and forced 80,000 people to evacuate, burning over 2.47 million acres. Experts call this summer one of the worst for wildfires in Europe’s recorded history.

The WWA report highlights that scorching temperatures exceeding 104°F, coupled with strong winds and severe drought, created the perfect storm for fire outbreaks. “Our study shows a clear climate change impact,” said Theodore Keeping from the Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial College London. He noted that we are experiencing new extremes in wildfire behavior, which are pushing firefighters to their limits. Without a swift transition away from fossil fuels, we could see global temperatures rise by up to 3°C this century.

The research found that winter rainfall has decreased by about 14% since the pre-industrial era, exacerbating dry conditions. Additionally, the likelihood of dry, hot periods that fuel fires has increased 13-fold due to climate change. High-pressure systems are also becoming more intense, leading to stronger northerly winds, known as Etesian winds, which further spread the fires.

Gavriil Xanthopoulos, from the Institute of Mediterranean Forest Ecosystems in Greece, noted that firefighters used to rely on these winds calming down to manage fires. However, that pattern appears to be shifting. “They can’t count on it anymore,” he said, indicating a need for more research on why wind speeds are increasing so frequently.

Flavio Lehner, an Earth and atmospheric sciences professor at Cornell University, emphasized that the findings align with existing research. He stated, “Climate change is stacking the odds for more severe wildfire seasons in the Mediterranean.”

As wildfires become more frequent and intense, it’s clear that climate change poses a significant risk to the region. A 2022 European Environment Agency report noted that the past decade has already seen a sharp rise in wildfire incidents throughout Europe. With increasing temperatures and changing weather patterns, the future may hold even graver threats unless proactive measures are taken.
