A stunning medieval seal has been uncovered in Essex, U.K., and it’s revealing secrets from centuries ago. A metal detectorist found this unique piece in Gosfield during the fall of 2024. What’s fascinating? It features a 2,000-year-old Roman gemstone at its center, making it a rare link between two distinct historical eras.
Experts from the U.K.’s Portable Antiquities Scheme examined the seal. Lori Rogerson, an archaeology liaison officer, noted how unusual it is to find an object that combines elements from different times. “I thought it was a really special find,” she remarked to the BBC.
This silver seal measures just 1 inch long and weighs around 0.23 ounces. It has a loop on one end, which suggests it may have been worn as a necklace rather than used as a signet ring. Around the edge, an inscription reads “SECRETUM.RICARDI,” meaning “Richard’s secret.” Accompanying this is a Christian cross symbol, known as a cross pattée, commonly associated with the Knights Templar.
At its center lies a carnelian stone, engraved with an image of a two-horse chariot. A charioteer is depicted holding the reins, possibly engaging in a circus race from ancient times. This gemstone is believed to date back to the late first century B.C. or early first century A.D., making it significantly older than the seal itself.
Rogerson suggests that Richard, the likely owner, chose this Roman gemstone intentionally to showcase his knowledge of history and status. “It’s clear this would indicate social standing,” she explained, highlighting how rare artifacts like this connect us to the past.
The seal has been proposed for consideration under the U.K.’s Treasure Act of 1996, as it is both silver and over 300 years old. Braintree Museum hopes to acquire this exciting find once the treasure inquest is complete.
