Stunning Highlights: Vernon Cadet Review, Command Change Ceremony & Award Celebrations

The 83rd Annual Ceremonial Review of the Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron 223 Red Lion took place on June 5 at the Vernon Military Camp. This event celebrated the achievements of 67 cadets and brought together more than 200 family and friends.

Dale Martell, who chairs the Aircraft Maintenance Programs at Okanagan College, served as the Reviewing Officer. He inspected the cadets before they showcased their skills in a March Past. During the ceremony, several cadets received awards for their progress over the winter months.

In a notable moment, Lt. Ben Noorduyn was promoted to Captain and took command of the squadron, replacing Capt. Jason Paas, who is stepping up to lead the Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps 1705 British Columbia Dragoons after four years with Squadron 223.

The Change of Command was officiated by Commander Paula McHale, the Regional Cadet Support Unit Commanding Officer. After the formalities, guests enjoyed refreshments and explored displays showcasing the cadets’ winter training highlights.

Events like this not only recognize the hard work of young cadets but also foster a sense of community. Research shows that such programs can boost leadership skills and confidence in youth, preparing them for the future. A study by the Cadet Program Development Trust indicated that 87% of participants feel more self-assured and equipped to handle challenges after joining cadet programs.
