Stunning Images Capture the Magnificent July ‘Buck Moon’ at Its Fullest Glow

July’s full moon, known as the “buck moon,” made a stunning appearance on July 10, 2025. This full moon was particularly special because it was the farthest from the sun this year. It got its name because male deer, or bucks, begin growing their antlers around this time.

The buck moon peaked at 4:37 p.m. ET, making it easy to see as it sat low on the horizon. This unique position is thanks to the summer solstice, which marks the start of summer. During this period, the sun is high in the sky, causing the moon to take a lower path across the night. This phenomenon makes the moon appear a bit orange, similar to what we see during sunset. This effect is due to Rayleigh scattering, where particles in the atmosphere scatter different wavelengths of light.

Full moons occur when the sun, Earth, and moon align perfectly. This alignment allows the sun’s light to fully illuminate the moon from our perspective. Even if you missed the big show on July 10, the moon will still be bright and visible for several nights afterward.

Interestingly, only five full moons remain in 2025. The next one will be the “sturgeon moon” on August 9, followed by three supermoons in October, November, and December.

Historical Context and Expert Insights:
Historically, different full moons have held significance across various cultures. The “buck moon” has been celebrated for centuries, often marking the time for hunting and gathering.

Astronomers and experts remind us that moon observations can boost mental health. A study by the University of Virginia found that spending time under natural light, including moonlight, can enhance mood and well-being.

Recent social media trends show an uptick in “moon gazing” posts, especially during major lunar events. Many users report feeling more connected to nature during these moments. Online hashtags related to moon watching have garnered millions of views, showcasing a growing interest in astronomy among everyday people.

In essence, the buck moon isn’t just a beautiful sight—it’s a reminder of the natural world’s rhythms and a spark for community engagement and personal reflection.
