The Los Angeles Chargers are parting ways with one of their most recognizable players, defensive end Joey Bosa. After spending nine seasons with the team, Bosa was released on Wednesday night.
At 29 years old, Bosa’s departure comes as the Chargers look to reshape their roster. His contract for 2025 carried a hefty cap hit of over $36 million. By cutting him, the team aims to save around $25.36 million, though they’ll face an $11.111 million dead money expense this year, as reported by Over the Cap.
Bosa, a standout from Ohio State, made a significant impact since he was drafted as the third overall pick in 2016. He quickly gained recognition, earning the AP Defensive Player of the Year title after a season where he recorded 10.5 sacks and 41 tackles. Throughout his career, he has been selected to five Pro Bowls, with his last appearance in 2024, helping the Chargers make the playoffs in coach Jim Harbaugh’s debut year.
However, injuries have plagued Bosa in recent years. He endured a broken hand during training camp and dealt with a glute strain that caused issues with his sciatic nerve. In the past three seasons, he played in only 28 games, starting in 18 of them.
Reflecting on his struggles, Bosa told reporters, “I feel like I’ve been letting my team down missing these games. It just sucks how the last few years have gone.” He acknowledged the mental toll of his injuries, stating that he reached a low point but believes it has made him mentally stronger.
With 72 sacks, Bosa sits second in the Chargers’ franchise history—a testament to his talent and determination.
