A recent study sheds light on the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, captured by the Keck II telescope in Hawaii on August 24, 2025. This object was notably far from both the Sun and Earth, at distances of about 2.75 and 2.6 astronomical units, respectively. Like previous observations from the Hubble Space Telescope, data from the Keck Cosmic Web Imager reveals a curious “anti-tail” pointing away from the Sun.
Unlike typical comets, which usually feature familiar materials, 3I/ATLAS shows unusual levels of nickel emissions in its gas plume—yet there’s no sign of iron. This peculiar observation is often linked to how industrial nickel is refined. Researchers suggest that a natural process, similar to this industrial method, could be occurring around 3I/ATLAS, concentrating nickel close to its nucleus.
Further measurements indicate that the emissions of nickel and cyanide (another gas present) behave oddly. Nickel shows up more prominently compared to cyanide, and the emission patterns are lopsided, stretching toward both the solar and anti-solar sides. Interestingly, there’s no typical comet tail visible—something that scientists expected to see but didn’t.
As researchers gather more data, 3I/ATLAS is proving to be quite different from what we know about comets. It ranks as a 4 on the Loeb scale, an informal metric to assess such anomalies in space. This ranking is based on previous discoveries, and the list keeps evolving.
Looking ahead, high-resolution images from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter will soon provide new insights as 3I/ATLAS comes within 30 million kilometers of Mars. This imagery will enhance our understanding and may help clarify any remaining mysteries. Further data from other missions, like Juice and Juno, slated for late 2025 and early 2026 respectively, will contribute even more.
