Stunning Satellite Footage Reveals Moon Eclipsing the Sun on a Unique Trajectory!

On September 21, skywatchers were buzzing with excitement as a partial solar eclipse dazzled viewers on Earth. High above, NOAA’s GOES-19 satellite was also capturing the event from space. Its Compact Coronagraph-1 (CCOR-1) recorded something truly remarkable: a natural solar eclipse.

Typically, CCOR-1 uses an occulting disk to block direct sunlight, allowing scientists to study the sun’s faint outer atmosphere known as the corona. But this time, the moon passed between the satellite and the sun, creating a rare moment of a solar eclipse observed from space.

Observers noticed that the imagery looked a bit unusual. Instead of just the sun disappearing, the entire corona vanished. This wasn’t a cosmic glitch but rather a result of how the images were processed. Bill Thompson from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center explained, “Normally, CCOR-1 captures both the corona and sunlight. During the eclipse, the expected scattered sunlight was missing, leading to an improper image subtraction.”

Interestingly, CCOR-1, as it orbits Earth, sometimes catches the moon in its view. Unlike other space-based coronagraphs stationed farther away, which don’t have the moon in their field, this could be the first recorded instance of a natural eclipse by a space-based coronagraph.

The path of the moon, which usually appears straight, looked zig-zagged this time. This odd movement was likely due to a scheduled yaw-flip maneuver that took place a day later. This maneuver, designed to recalibrate the satellite’s orientation, may have caused the moon’s path to appear distorted in the processed images.

The event sparked conversations online, with many enthusiastic about the technology that allowed us to see such a unique cosmic occurrence. Social media platforms were filled with reactions, ranging from awe to questions about how space technology works.
