Stunning Visuals Highlight Scientists in Action: A CNN Exclusive

This year’s Nature Scientist at Work competition offered a captivating glimpse into the world of science. Over 200 entries were submitted, showcasing the hard work and creativity of scientists globally. A panel from the journal Nature selected six winners, highlighting the challenges and triumphs researchers face in their fields.

One standout image was taken by Emma Vogel, a PhD student at the University of Tromsø. It captures biologist Audun Rikardsen scanning the waters near fishing boats in northern Norway. He uses an airgun to deploy tags that help track whales. Vogel vividly recalled the experience, stating, “You could smell their breath. And you could hear them before you can see them, which is always quite incredible.”

The winning images depict a range of environments and activities. For instance, one image shows researchers taking ice core samples in Svalbard, while another features biologists holding tiny froglets in California’s Lassen National Forest. Each photo tells a unique story about the scientist’s work and dedication.

Interestingly, these images also reflect the growing importance of environmental research. A recent survey by the Pew Research Center found that 67% of adults believe that protecting the environment should be a top priority for the government. These sentiments underscore the significance of the scientists’ work depicted in the competition.

One of the images features a scientist beside a weather balloon in Greece, enveloped in fog, while another shows the South Pole Telescope illuminated by an aurora. These images remind us of the diverse conditions scientists face, from extreme cold to foggy peaks.

In another winning entry, a silhouette of a man entering a cabin against a starry Siberian sky highlights the isolation many researchers endure. As photographer Jiayi Wang noted, working in such remote areas can be beautiful yet also tedious, with no distractions and plenty of time to reflect.

The Nature Scientist at Work competition not only celebrates stunning photography but also raises awareness about the critical research being done worldwide. It shows how science is all around us, often in unexpected places, and encourages us to appreciate the dedicated individuals working hard to improve our understanding of the planet.
