LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 19, 2026) — The University Press of Kentucky is now open for submissions to its new imprint, Screen Door Press. This initiative, launched in partnership with the Thomas D. Clark Foundation, aims to highlight voices deeply rooted in Black literary traditions. The deadline for submissions is April 20.
Under the guidance of Crystal Wilkinson, a noted author and former Kentucky Poet Laureate, Screen Door Press seeks diverse and impactful stories. Wilkinson’s accolades include an NAACP Image Award and an O. Henry Prize. She emphasizes the importance of narratives that reflect the wide-ranging experiences of the Black diaspora. Her efforts are made even more critical as recent surveys show that readers are increasingly interested in diverse literature, with 58% of respondents stating they actively seek out books by authors of different backgrounds.
The imprint is looking for exceptional fiction, including novels, novellas, and short stories that bring forth compelling characters and resonate deeply with readers. According to recent data from the Book Industry Study Group, books that engage with diverse voices not only enrich readers but also see higher sales potential.
Each submitted manuscript should come with a cover letter, an author biography, and full contact information. Selected works will undergo a thorough publication process that includes peer review and marketing support. Anyone, regardless of their background, can submit their work.
The first titles from Screen Door Press, released in Spring 2026, include “Belonging to the Air: A Novel” by Avery Irons and “But Where’s Home?: A Novella and Stories” by Toni Ann Johnson. Both have received positive reviews, showcasing the imprint’s commitment to high-quality literature.
As the literary world evolves, opportunities like Screen Door Press play an essential role in amplifying underrepresented voices. This initiative not only contributes to a richer literary landscape but also reflects a broader societal shift towards inclusivity in storytelling.
