Here’s an important update from the Choctaw Nation:
DURANT, Okla. (April 29, 2026) — The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma (CNO) is once again launching its Summer EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) program for 2026. This program supports eligible school-aged children by providing access to nutritious meals during the summer months when school is out.
In Oklahoma, over 403,000 kids are anticipated to qualify for this program. Alarmingly, more than 223,000 children, or about one in four, face food insecurity.
Children who attend participating school districts within the Choctaw Nation, are enrolled in pre-K through 12th grade, and receive free or reduced-price meals will be automatically enrolled in the program. If your child doesn’t meet these criteria, families can apply online at Healthy Together.
Each eligible family will receive a one-time benefit of $120 per child to purchase healthy food from participating stores. This helps families afford nutritious options similar to those offered through WIC and supports them during May, June, and July.
To confirm enrollment or ask questions, families can contact 580-916-9239.
“It’s vital that our children have access to healthy meals,” said CNO Chief Gary Batton. “Programs like Summer EBT ensure that families can maintain a healthy diet in the summer.”
Shelly Rector, a USDA Food and Nutrition manager for CNO, noted that many kids depend on school meals during the year. “The Summer EBT program helps bridge that gap by giving families the resources they need,” she said.
This initiative isn’t just local. Similar programs exist across the U.S. In 2021, the USDA reported a 28% increase in food assistance applications, showing a growing need for programs like these, especially as families continue to feel the impact of economic challenges.
Families outside the Choctaw Nation can learn about eligibility and enrollment options at oksebt.org.
In today’s world, ensuring children have access to healthy meals is more important than ever. As more people recognize the importance of food security, community support and programs like Summer EBT play a crucial role in keeping kids healthy and thriving.
