SUMMIT COUNTY — Many people in Akron and Summit County struggle with food access. For residents like Carrie Burch, getting to the grocery store can feel daunting.
“Gas prices are rising, which makes it tough for a lot of folks,” Burch shared.
Recent data from Summit County public health reveals that around 30,000 residents live in food deserts—areas with both high poverty rates and no access to large grocery stores. Many of these areas are concentrated in Akron and southern Barberton.
“Nutrition plays a crucial role in health. Without good health, it becomes challenging to maintain a job or stable housing,” said Akron Mayor Shammas Malik, highlighting the community’s struggles.
To tackle this issue, the Summit Fresh mobile market launched an innovative solution. This grocery store on wheels travels to food deserts, offering fresh and affordable produce. “We’re bringing the grocery store experience right into these neighborhoods,” explained Executive Director Ebony Yeboah-Amankwah.
Their first stop was on a Saturday at the Reach Opportunity Center in the Summit Lake neighborhood. Burch was pleasantly surprised by the variety: “I got orange juice, bananas, cantaloupe, and even bagels. I expected just fruits and vegetables!”
In addition to fresh produce, shoppers can find ice cream, bread, cereal, and various meal options. “Our goal is to reach areas lacking grocery stores and ensure they have access to fresh food. We also offer coupons to the first 25 customers to help with costs,” Yeboah-Amankwah added.
The Summit Fresh Mobile Market operates every Monday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with plans to expand its schedule. “We hope to serve these communities four to five days a week,” she mentioned.
Surveys show that over 50% of residents in these food deserts express a need for more food access options. Gathering feedback from community stops will help ensure the market meets the needs of residents.
