WellCare of Kentucky recently held its sixth annual Community Health Champions Awards at Churchill Downs. This event celebrated individuals and organizations dedicated to improving health in the state. Corey Ewing, the Plan President, expressed pride in recognizing those who tirelessly work to enhance health for Kentuckians.
One standout honoree was SUN Behavioral Health from Erlanger, awarded for its commitment to mental health and substance use disorders. They have formed innovative partnerships, particularly with local schools, offering therapy services right on campus. This early access to care helps students address their needs promptly.
SUN’s efforts have also significantly improved community health by reducing the number of transfers to state hospitals and easing burdens on emergency departments. Their collaboration with Kentucky’s Department for Community Based Services has further strengthened support for families in the child welfare system.
This year, WellCare received over 250 nominations for the awards. Twelve winners were recognized across Kentucky’s Medicaid regions. Each regional winner received a $3,000 grant, while the statewide winner, SUN Behavioral Health, received $5,000.
Here’s a list of the regional winners:
- Region 1: Dianne Owen, West Kentucky Educational Cooperative
- Region 2: Karyleen Irizarry, River Valley Behavioral Health
- Region 3: Olivia Raley, Bardstown Police Department
- Region 4: Cameron Levis, Bowling Green Parks and Recreation

This awards ceremony not only applauds current achievements in community health but also highlights a growing trend. According to recent studies, mental health initiatives in schools are becoming increasingly popular nationwide. Research shows that increased access to mental health services can lead to better academic outcomes.
By showcasing these champions, WellCare of Kentucky inspires others to get involved in community health efforts. Positive change starts with individuals and organizations that care. Their dedication can lead to a healthier, stronger Kentucky.
